How to successfully achieve oyster seed growth?

Dec. 17, 2021

1. Buy your seeds at the right time of year.

The best time to buy is February/March or October.

2. Choose between triploids or diploids.

While triploids may seem more attractive because they allow for sales throughout the summer and are preferred for specialty products, there is evidence that diploids are more resistant to mortality. Or why not choose a combination of triploids and diploids? Make sure batches are clearly identified and kept separate so you can evaluate for yourself which ones work better on your site.

3. Ask specifically for seeds grown in nurseries or parks (sea).

Once spat exceeds G6, they are usually removed from the sea bed to "harden". This gives the seeds a chance to become more resistant before they are sold.

4. Did you know that you can specifically request a "batch tail"?

These oysters are slower growing, but are more suitable for the production of specialty dishes on the premises, resulting in a higher meat content of the oysters.

5. Make sure the time from hatchery to return to the water is as short as possible.

If you are pressed for time, you may want to consider bagging about 4 kg/bag first and then coming back and dividing them into appropriate densities. (e.g., G6 bags of about 1000/4 mm).

6. Decide where to place the seeds in the field.

If you want a faster growth rate, place your seeds low on the bank, if you want a slower growth rate, place your seeds on the bank so as to limit mortality as much as possible.

7. Rotate the bag often to get a good shape.

Use TAONI oyster mesh bags to increase the water flow and space in the bag to get a better shape.
